Mersuka Dopazo, born in 1971 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, creates monumental textile works in which painting, drawing, handmade paper and fabric merge into a single visual language. Represented by Jakobson Gallery in Paris and Saint Tropez, the Spanish artist, now based in Bali, has established herself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary art. Her instantly recognisable compositions overflow with colour, tenderness and vitality. From Law to Art, A Calling Impossible to Ignore Nothing seemed to predestine Mersuka Dopazo to the walls of major international art fairs except an undeniable inner calling. Trained in law, she nevertheless continued to paint until her passion became impossible to resist. Choosing art meant choosing to tell stories, create meaningful connections and share emotion. That turning point continues to shape every aspect of her work. For Mersuka, painting is not simply a profession. It is a way of inhabiting the world, guided by love. Varanasi, The Birth of a Signature Her artistic identity was born in Varanasi, India. Along the banks of the Ganges, she watched women washing their saris in the river before laying them out to dry across the ghats, a vision that profoundly transformed her practice. From that moment, textiles became an essential part of her artistic language.

Vintage saris sourced from Indian markets, handmade papers and printed fabrics collected throughout Indonesia and China each carry the memory of the hands that created them. By assembling these materials, Mersuka Dopazo brings together the work of countless anonymous artisans within a single composition. For her, collage is not merely a technique. It is a way of connecting cultures, memories and lives.

Art at the Scale of Life Life sized figures, abundant still lifes and intimate everyday scenes populate Mersuka Dopazo's monumental canvases. Her works possess the grandeur of murals while retaining the delicacy of miniature paintings. Working intuitively and without preliminary sketches, she allows each colour to lead naturally to the next. Layer after layer, fabric, paint and drawing come together in richly textured compositions. A mother of six, she occasionally incorporates drawings made by her children into her paintings, transforming them into characters, muses and silent presences within her universe. Above all, her work seeks to communicate one essential feeling, joy. International Recognition The international art world quickly embraced her singular vision. During Art Miami 2022, her solo presentation sold out entirely and Artnet News named her one of the fair's seven breakout artists, recognising her as one of the most promising talents in contemporary art. Her work has since been exhibited in London, New York, Geneva and at major international art fairs including Art Miami, LA Art Show, Art Palm Beach and Seattle Art Fair.
