O'GRINGO
Biography
O Gringo, the artistic name of Bastien Tomasini, is a French artist born in Nice on the French Riviera in 1988. Fifteen years ago, his singular artistic journey began to take shape through a profound passion for drawing, geometry, photography, history, and philosophy. Over more than fifteen years of rigorous aesthetic research, he has developed a distinctive visual language that brings together cultural heritage, history, urban art, and contemporary techniques, establishing himself today as one of the leading figures of mixed and hybrid art.
O Gringo has created a remarkably rich material universe in which each artwork becomes a narrative portal. Through his creations, he tells stories that travel from Asia to Africa before returning to Europe to explore the Arab legacy left in Spain, Portugal, and Italy, as well as the historical significance of the city of Delft in the Netherlands and the enduring fascination with its world renowned blue.
Transcending borders and eras, the artist revisits French history through his iconic Marianne, follows the journey of the azulejos to Mexico to pay tribute to Frida Kahlo, and brings together his most emblematic figures within a singular universe where history, theory, and imagination merge seamlessly.
His hybrid approach challenges the traditional limits of two dimensional art through a bold fusion of materials crafted by the artist himself and contemporary techniques. Hand carved ceramics, wood, and azulejos are combined with canvas, Fine Art paper, structural cardboard, cement, marble, liquid resin, acrylic paint, oil paint, charcoal, and spray paint, creating works of remarkable depth and complexity.
Today, O Gringo's work enjoys significant institutional recognition. In June 2022, his career reached one of its most important milestones when, at the invitation of Dr. Alexandre Pais, former Director of the National Museum of Azulejo and current President of Museums and Monuments of Portugal, O Gringo presented his solo exhibition Esperança Além do Horizonte at the National Museum of Azulejo in Lisbon.
