Mersuka Dopazo was born in 1971 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. Trained in law, she never stopped painting until her true calling prevailed: to tell stories, create, and share emotion. For her, painting is not simply a profession it is a way of engaging with the world, guided by love.

It was in Varanasi, India, that her artistic signature was born. Along the banks of the Ganges, she watched women washing their saris in the river before laying them out to dry across the ghats, an image that would profoundly shape her work. From that moment on, textiles became an essential part of her artistic language. Antique saris sourced from Indian markets, handmade papers, and fabrics collected throughout Indonesia and China each carry the memory of the hands that created them. By bringing these materials together, Dopazo allows the work of countless anonymous artisans to converse within a single composition.

Now based in Bali, she creates monumental works in which painting, drawing, paper and textiles merge into a harmonious whole. Whether depicting life-sized figures or abundant still lifes, her canvases possess the scale of murals and the delicacy of miniature paintings. She works intuitively, without preliminary sketches, allowing each colour to lead naturally to the next. At times, she incorporates drawings made by her children, transforming them into characters and muses within her richly layered universe. Above all, her work seeks to communicate one essential feeling: joy.

The art world quickly embraced her distinctive vision. During Art Miami 2022, her solo presentation sold out completely, and Artnet News named her one of the fair's breakout artists. Exhibited in London, New York and Geneva, and collected across three continents, Mersuka Dopazo is now proudly represented by Jakobson Gallery in Saint-Tropez.
