HUANG YULONG

Biography

Huang Yulong, born in 1983 in Anhui Province, China, is an international sculptor based in Beijing. He graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture) from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in Jiangxi Province. He belongs to the new generation of Chinese artists, particularly the “post-80s” generation and the “only-child” generation. His work reflects on contemporary identity, shaped by the encounter between Chinese culture and the sudden, powerful influence of foreign culture during his formative years.

His art employs cultural symbols and draws on concepts, ideologies, and philosophies from both his past and present. Rather than attempting to erase cultural boundaries or blur the distinction between “high” and “low” culture, Huang Yulong articulates a new reality one experienced by a generation that grew up between tradition and globalization. This duality is especially evident in his well-known sculptures of Buddhas wearing hooded sweatshirts, where Eastern heritage merges with contemporary Western aesthetics.

Deeply influenced by hip-hop culture, which has driven his artistic practice for nearly a decade, he finds in its free, passionate, and rebellious spirit a powerful means of expressing his emotions. Discovered during his adolescence, long before his formal engagement with art, hip-hop provided him with an outlet to cope with the tensions and challenges of youth, gradually becoming a lifelong commitment and way of life. While shaped by this global cultural influence, his perspective remains firmly rooted in Chinese tradition, which he continuously draws upon to enrich his artistic language.

In 2013, Complex magazine named him one of the “25 Chinese Contemporary Artists to Know.” His works have been exhibited internationally, including in Niubi Newbie Kids II at Schoeni Gallery in Hong Kong, his solo exhibition Zeitgeist at the Himalayas Art Museum in Shanghai, and Chinese Artist / Marseille Artist in Marseille. He has also participated in major events such as the 4th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea and the Art Beijing fair. In 2015, he held his first solo exhibition, NULL, in Hong Kong.
